Heversham St Peter’s CE School

Jul 7, 2017

The Diocese of Carlisle’s The Good Shepherd Multi Academy Trust can confirm that the Secretary of State for Education has given final agreement for the closure of Heversham St Peter’s CE School.

It follows a decision taken by members of the Trust’s board in March recommending closure. This followed a detailed consultation with parents, local stakeholders, staff and governors about the school’s future.

The school was joint top performer in Cumbria in the 2016 SATs results but, though there is capacity for 105 pupils, only 15 are on roll with no children in Reception and Year One and no foreseeable significant increase in pupil numbers. Based around those numbers the school is not financially sustainable.

The school’s previous Headteacher retired at the end of 2016 and there has been a part-time Executive Headteacher in place temporarily. There are two part-time teachers, a part-time teaching assistant, after school club leader and a part-time administrator.

Following confirmation of the Secretary of State’s decision, the school will formally close on Thursday 31 August. The Trust has committed to explore all potential educational uses for the site in the future.

Michael Mill, Chief Executive of The Good Shepherd MAT, said: “It is with a sense of real sadness and regret that we have been forced to make this difficult decision. Despite detailed consultation with stakeholders, during which all funding routes were explored, it became clear there were no viable funding options.

“We have kept all our key stakeholders informed of the latest developments throughout this process. The latest school newsletter to all parents and carers of pupils, explains that the funding agreement with the Secretary of State will now be terminated, while staff have also been briefed. We will continue to offer our full support to the school.”

Meanwhile a special Open Day will celebrate the history of the school, with people invited to attend on Monday 17 July between 1.30pm and 3.15pm and again between 6pm and 8pm to share memories and view a presentation by pupils.

Jane Clarke, Chair of the Local Governing Board, said: “We have been carefully planning for this closure with staff and parents. The children have enjoyed their final term and are looking forward to their new schools. Our focus now is on celebrating the life of the school with the community.”
